Friday Finds in Newspapers: 16 October 2015

• The National Library of Australia's Trove has updated 125 of its titles with more content. These include newspapers from New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia.
• The Library of Congress' Chronicling America has updated 12 of its titles with more content from the District of Columbia, Montana, and Tennessee.
• In September, GenealogyBank added 11 new titles and updated 11 of its titles with more content. These include newspapers from California, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. • The Digital Library of Georgia has created a new resource, the West Georgia Historic Newspapers Archive, with six newspaper titles published in five west Georgia cities (Butler, Carrollton, Dallas, Douglasville, LaGrange) from 1843 to 1942. Read details here.
• The Digital Library of Georgia has also re-released its South Georgia Historic Newspaper Archive so that it is compatible with all browsers. Details here.

Additions, Updates, and Corrections of U.S. Newspaper Pages

Over the past 10 months, I have slowly made many updates, corrections, and additions to the pages of the Online Historical Newspaper site, specifically the U.S. pages. For some time, I was unable to do any work on the site, as I had shoulder surgery shortly before Christmas 2013, and was in physical therapy until the spring.

This summer, I made the most changes on the site, but realized I have never posted an update. So here goes! You'll see many new and updated titles from the Library of Congress' Chronicling America site. I have everything updated for the states Alabama through Michigan from the Library of Congress, as of today.

NEH Announces $3.8 Million for 2011 NDNP Awards, Including Three New States

 From the Library of Congress:

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced on July 27, 2011 awards totaling $3.8 million to 13 institutions representing their states in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Three of these institutions - Indiana State Library, State Historical Society of North Dakota, and the West Virginia University Research Corporation - are new to the program this year. Ten other institutions - the University of Illinois-Urbana, Kansas State Historical Society, University of Kentucky-Lexington, Louisiana State University, Minnesota Historical Society, Montana Historical Society, Oklahoma Historical Society, University of South Carolina, and the University of North Texas - have received continuing awards to contribute additional content to the program. This funding will support the selection and digitization of historic American newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 by each participating state, according to NDNP guidelines. The Library of Congress (LC) will make these newspapers available to the public through the Chronicling America Website (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) beginning in mid-2012. In all, 28 states have institutions participating in the program.

NDNP, a partnership between the NEH and the LC, is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of all U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages. Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. The NEH grant program will fund the contribution of content from, eventually, all U.S. states and territories.

Recent Updates and New Pages for Titles Digitized by the LOC

I recently checked the Library of Congress' (LOC) Chronicling America website and found there were numerous titles I needed to update (the availability of years for a particular title) or add to my website. Corrections are where I've found errors in my original listings and made the necessary changes

More Free Kentucky Online Historical Newspapers!

Thanks to one of my readers, I have discovered even more free Kentucky online historical newspapers! The Kentuckiana Digital Library has lots of great digital resources--not just newspapers--and these include many of the Kentucky papers that the Library of Congress's Chronicling America is digitizing (it's all part of the same project). However, on closer investigation, I discovered that the dates of some of the same papers at the KDL are not always exactly or even inclusive of what the Library of Congress has. Some of the dates of the same papers at KDL are earlier or later than what you see at the LOC.  And there are some newspapers at KDL that don't appear at the LOC.  So check them out!

Kentucky New Page

I've just added a new page to the site for Kentucky. Included are links to 51 newspapers digitized by the Library of Congress's Chronicling America project - all free!

This makes a total of 11 links--10 states and the District of Columbia--for my United States page. Many more links and pages to come!
